Volunteer Examiner ( VE )


The Raritan Valley Radio Club will hold VE (Volunteer Exams) sessions on the following dates. Preregistration and request only.

The location for the exams is, the Somerset Fire Academy 402 Roycefield road in Hillsborough NJ. The registration time will be announced in advance of the exam date. Registration will start at 8:30 am with testing starting at 9:00 am. You must be there before the exams start or you will not be allowed to take an exam. If you are handicapped and need special assistance you must call in advance to give the examiners time to set up for your particular needs.

Bring two forms of identification; one should have a photo on it. FCC form 605 will be furnished at the time of registration. Form 605 must be completed in ink so bring a pen and a pencil for the exams. The fee for the exams is $15.00. Make check payable to "ARRL/VEC". If you are a licensed Ham, please bring the original of your license and a photocopy. The original will be returned to you.

Exam elements required for license is as follows:
Technician = 2.
General = 3.
Extra = 4.

​When a candidate completes an exam element, the examiners will grade the exam, and 70 percent or greater constitute a passing score. If required by you the next higher element will be administered, etc. Upon completion of all exam elements you will be given a CSCE (Certificate of Successful Completion of Exams) showing all elements successfully completed and the class of license the candidate is qualified for. If the candidate is upgrading from a previous class of license the new class of license is instant and can be used as stated on the back of the CSCE form. New candidates must wait until the FCC issues a call sign, which usually takes about 7 to 10 days. After 7 days, candidates can call the ARRL at 1-860-594-0300 to check if a call sign has been assigned. If a call sign has been issued, the new licensee can operate as per FCC rules and regulations.

All RVRC examiners are fully accredited by the ARRL/VEC (ARRL VOLUNTEER EXAMINER COORDINATOR).   All exam material will be furnished at the session and meet all the requirements of current FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION rules and regulations, and are administered in accordance with those requirements and generally accepted educational testing principals and practices.
